The initial iteration of my Box Dog Bikes pelican (documented here) was as a single-speed/fixed-gear randonneur. In 2022 my knees were not having any of that anymore, so I refit it with gears, and also took the opportunity to tweak a few things to bring it even closer to my rando bike ideal.
Drive Train
My main focus on the refit was obviously the drive train, which consists of a Velo Orange wide range double crank set, with brass crank caps, which make for an awesome little contrasting visual detail.
To shift the front, I found a vintage dead stock Shimano front derailleur from the 1980s, still in its sealed bag, that fit the aesthetic perfectly, for $5 on eBay!
In the rear is a Shimano Ultegra RD-6500 rear derailleur (with logos polished off).
They're both shifted by Shimano Dura-Ace SL-7700 downtube shifters. These were the last DT shifters Shimano made that supported both indexing and friction shifting.
Fenders
I replaced the homemade front fender headlight mount from the initial build with a beautifully machined Velolumino AT headlight mount. It looks very clean, and will be much more durable without damaging the fender.
Added a beautiful Honjo rear fender reinforcement, available from renehersecycles.com.
Painted a matching stripe down the center of the fenders, with a vivid orange tip on the ends. The frame color of the Pelican frame is RAL 5015 Sky Blue, and Montana Colors has a line of RAL spray paints with a 5015 that perfectly matches the Pelican's powder coat.
Miscellaneous Cosmetics
The first generation Pelican didn't have any wire guides on the front fork, so the generator hub cable is held in place with zip ties - those were originally black, but it turns out you can get RAL 5015 zip ties to blend in perfectly!
I replaced the Nitto stem with a Velo Orange Grand Cru stem, which resembles a classic French threaded stem.
Since I had the RAL 5015 color matched paint, I painted the clamp-on pump pegs, the Lezyne pump, and even the Presta valve caps to match.
